Mr Justman does not fit the stereotype of ageing hippy or teenage stoner. He began smoking cannabis after finding the cocktail of drugs he was taking for his HIV was ineffective at easing his pain and caused side effects including diarrhoea and headaches.

He regularly visits the SPARC dispensary in San Francisco to collect his daily hit of marijuana.

The farming and dispensing of marijuana for medicinal purposes has been legal under Californian state law since 1996, but remains banned under US federal law.

California will be voting on November 2 whether to approve Proposition 19, a law which would legalise the drug for personal recreational use in the US state.
