UK Home Office Misses Point With Drug Scheduling Argument

A recent letter from the UK Home Office claims that categorizing substances as Schedule 1 -- the most severe scheduling -- does not impede research into these drugs, seemingly ignoring the enormous financial and bureaucratic obstacles such scheduling places on this research.

The letter, addressed to Professor Les Iversen, chair of the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs (ACMD), was released publicly on July 14 and summarized the Home Office’s findings from last year's "scoping exercise." The responses from the “cross-section of the scientific community” suggested that categorizing substances as Schedule 1 does not hinder medical research. The letter highlighted, rather, that a key outcome from the exercise was that a lack of familiarity with the licensing requirements and application process were some of the most significant issues in hindering research of Schedule 1 substances, not the scheduling itself.
