UK: Police tests find nearly half of motorists had drugs in system

NEARLY half of motorists stopped by police since the introduction of new drug laws have tested positive for driving with substances in their system.

Staffordshire Police has used new roadside drug kits to test around 25 people since legislation came in to make it easier to prosecute those driving under the influence.

New powers, introduced in March, mean officers can now test for the presence of cocaine and cannabis at the roadside for the first time.

Police across England and Wales had previously needed to rely on the opinion of a medical professional to authorise a blood sample at a station to test for drugs. But now police are able to know within eight minutes, at the roadside, if someone has taken drugs. And since the beginning of March, 11 people have tested positive for drugs in their system in Staffordshire.

They were then brought into custody and blood samples...
