BC College of Physicians adjusts, re-releases Marijuana Guidelines

The College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia has released a new, updated version of their standard on Marijuana for Medical Purposes today.

The standard was initially released in late March of this year, and then quietly removed a few weeks later, reportedly due to physician feedback over concerns with some of the specific ‘guidelines’ which prevented doctors from signing a medical document for medical marijuana for anyone under 25.  Unlike a similar and recent Ontario College policy statement which gives doctors recommendations to make their own decisions, the BC College gave specific rules for doctors to follow with little to no discretion.

Some doctors in BC reportedly had already been getting pressure from the Provincial College because of the initially strict Guidelines, causing some doctors to push back and demand the college alter the Guidelines to allow for physician discretion, similar to the Ontario College’s policy released earlier...
