New Massachusetts medical marijuana licensing process begins June 29

Massachusetts will begin accepting applications for new medical marijuana dispensaries on June 29, the Department of Public Health announced Friday.

In April, the department announced that it was revamping its troubled medical marijuana licensing process.

Under former governor Deval Patrick, the state created a process by which applications were scored and then competed against one another for a license. The process was marred with problems. The department slowed down the approval process when some applicants were caught overstating levels of local support or having other problems with their applications. But then patient advocates complained that the process was proceeding too slowly. No dispensaries have opened yet, more than two years after voters approved medical marijuana as a ballot initiative.

Under Gov. Charlie Baker, the administration decided to overhaul the process and turn it into a more typical licensing process.
