Proposal would ease Pierce Co. marijuana restrictions

PIERCE CO - A new proposal that's in Pierce County Committee would lessen the rules in the county dealing with marijuana production, processing and retail sales.

The ordinance, sponsored by council members Derek Young, Connie Ladenburg, and Rick Talbert, would remove federal government authorization as a condition of approval for a marijuana-licensed business. It would also remove a requirement that limits marijuana retail sales to detached buildings.

"What we've ended up with - instead of a tightly controlled regulated tax system ... we have this unlicensed, unregulated dispensaries that have proliferated throughout," Council Member Derek Young told KING 5 News Sunday. "We sort of have the worst of both worlds. We don't get the benefits of a regulated market system and instead we have this sort of gray market."
