ResponsibleOhio looks to expunge marijuana convictions

DAYTON, Ohio (WDTN) – For decades Ohioans have been convicted for any activity involving marijuana, that’s because for decades the drug has been banned in the Buckeye State.

But now more than ever, Ohioans are in favor of legalizing the drug.

ResponsibleOhio is pioneering that effort with an amendment.

Ohioans could vote on the measure as soon as this November.

And the group is taking it one step further, calling for all nonviolent marijuana convictions to be expunged.

“It does set somewhat of a precedent, but it also reflects the change in our society,” said Thaddeus Hoffmeister, a law professor at the University of Dayton (UD). “I think this idea for many years– we’ve placed a label on marijuana and stigmatized that as criminal, but yet what I always tell people is– those who think that marijuana is more (of a) danger to society than alcohol that they should go...
