Medical journal Lancet blows smoking hole in arguments against legalizing marijuana

Another one of the leading arguments against legalizing cannabis for adults is going up in smoke.

Last week, data showed concerns about children accidentally eating marijuana is widely overstated.

Monday, a major study from the medical journal Lancet concludes “medical marijuana use does increase adolescent marijuana use.”

Emotional arguments about protecting children have been among the chief critiques of medical cannabis legalization in 35 states and recreational legalization in four states and Washington D.C.

Lancet implored such critics to listen to science, not their cultural bias.

“This study draws attention to the importance of undertaking rigorous scientific research to test hypotheses and using the results to develop sensible health policies. Policies might sometimes be shaped by preconceived notions that do not end up being true, and Hasin and colleagues’ study is an example of such an occurrence—an easy assumption to make would be that medical marijuana laws would increase access
