California city to create 'Marijuana Innovation Zone'

Medical marijuana has come as welcome news for plenty of California citizens, but it’s also created a zoning headache for many cities and would-be dispensaries, according to Next City.

Many cities don’t allow dispensaries at all, and those that do — like Los Angeles and San Jose — have had to deal with hundreds of quasi-legal, un-permitted operations popping up around town. Debates are flaring over where dispensaries can and should be located.

But the northwest city of Arcata is a bit of an anomaly on this matter. Not only has Arcata decided to embrace medical cannabis distribution and production, it’s also planning to create a first-of-its-kind medical marijuana district.
