5 things to know about medical marijuana in NY
Medical marijuana is expected to become available in New York in January, 2016. Here are five things to know about the program:
Only the sickest patients will get medical pot. Medicare marijuana use will be restricted to patients with these 10 conditions: cancer, HIV or AIDS, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury with spasticity, epilepsy, inflammatory bowel disease, neuropathy, and Huntington's disease.
How patients will get it. Patients will not be able to get medical marijuana from a dispensary unless they register with the state. The state Health Department will issue patients registry identification cards. In order to get a card, patients must first be certified by a doctor treating them for their serious condition. The doctor must be registered with the state and have completed a four-hour training course. The state has not announced when the patient registration process will begin.
