Some Health Systems ‘Just Say No’ To Medical Marijuana

Medical marijuana patients are required to have a physician’s signature to purchase medical marijuana in Illinois. Although Illinois is among 23 states that allow marijuana for medical use some health systems are not permitting doctors to sign off because marijuana is still illegal at the federal level.

Some healthcare organizations are cautiously permitting doctors to participate and even hold training sessions in order to ensure that physicians are aware of their legal responsibilities. According to the law, physicians are required to sign a five-page form stating that they have a “bona fide physician-patient relationship” that extends beyond a marijuana consultation, and that the specific patient has an approved diagnosis and will probably benefit from the use of marijuana. The physicians, not the patients, must mail the document to the Illinois Department of Public Health.
