Can Chicago Have a Thriving Marijuana Startup Scene?

Medical marijuana is officially growing--both literally and figuratively--in the state of Illinois, with cultivation centers producing strains that are expected to harvest around October. In Illinois 18 cultivation centers were issued licenses back in March, which will initially deliver to 60 dispensaries around the state.

With the medical marijuana industry just getting off the ground in Illinois--only 2,800 patients have been approved to use medical Cannabis--there's still a lot we don't know about the demand for medical pot in the state. There are legislative roadblocks--like limits on what medical conditions are eligible for cannabis prescriptions--and the stigma that remains around the drug. But as states around the country begin to adopt medical marijuana-friendly laws, and new startups pop up and start raising serious money, the question remains: Will Chicago ever have a thriving marijuana startup scene?
