BMI View: In the wake of major new legislative reforms in Jamaica's ongoing fight against gang activity , including adopting some of the most liberal marijuana laws in the world, further progress in reducing violence will continue, but remain gradual. Elevated crime will weigh on investor sentiment, partially offsetting the effects of the country's improving economic outlook .

Jamaica's efforts to rein in violent crime, particularly the murder rate, will gradually bear fruit, continuing a trend which has seen the murder rate fall more than 40.0% since 2009. Nevertheless, at a murder rate of 36.0 per 100,000 people according to the UN Office on Drugs and Crime, Jamaica's level of violence is still among the world's highest, particularly in the capital city of Kingston.
