Inside the 'lemon squeezer' factory of Ohio's fastest-growing potpreneur

Apeks Supercritical is growing so fast supplying the marijuana industry in other states that it may have to start building an expansion by spring on its Licking County factory that opened just this year.

Founder and President Andy Joseph knows the pot biz is a bubble – but he has a plan to keep the business aloft.

Apeks Supercritical – the DBA for Apeks LLC, which he founded in 2001 – makes equipment for extracting botanical oils using carbon dioxide. He likened it to a "lemon squeezer" for a feature in Friday's Columbus Business First. Other extractors use butane or other toxic chemicals.

Joseph first developed it for the flavoring and perfume industries, until a whole bunch of orders came from California in 2012 for processing "lavendar."

OK, it was really pot.

Since then about 90 percent of sales are to processors in states that have legalized – Apeks is on track...
