Likelihood of trying e-cigarettes trails off with increasing age, CDC report shows

Federal survey data collected in 2014 suggest that older adults have had relatively little interest in e-cigarettes, with individuals younger than 25 being the primary experimenters and regular users.

Data from the National Health Interview survey of adults, summarized in a reportpublished Wednesday by the CDC's National Center for Health Statistics, showed that respondents in the 18-24 age range were far more likely than older age groups to have tried electronic cigarettes at least once.

"Although fewer than 4% of adults who had never smoked conventional cigarettes had ever tried an e-cigarette, nearly 1 in 10 never-smokers aged 18-24 had tried an e-cigarette at least once," the report noted. In contrast, the lifetime prevalence among never-smokers in the 45-64 age range was 1.2%, and among those 65 and older it was 0.2%.
