Marijuana gets only quick puffs in GOP debate in Boulder, Colorado

Colorado's new green income stream has received only two very brief mentions during the Republican debate at the University of Colorado-Boulder.

Of those, only one was a real question, direct to Gov. John Kasich of Ohio: "Given the budget pressures in Ohio and other states, is that a revenue stream you'd like to have?"

"Sending mixed messages to kids about drugs is a disaster," Kasich replied, before redirecting the conversation to add his thoughts to a previous question about income inequality.

The other, earlier reference to marijuana was nothing more than a joke, when Ted Cruz joked about sharing a "famous Colorado brownie" with the moderators. It was good wit, but didn't address the financial question that would be asked later.

But the tax revenue from marijuana is no laughing matter or puff of smoke.

In fact, Colorado’s recreational marijuana taxation and regulation system was significantly more profitable than expected....
