Businesses, patients, critics worry as Illinois medical marijuana approaches implementation

The long, slow road to a legal medical marijuana regime in Illinois is finally approaching the point of getting the drugs to patients. This week, regulators expect to send official identification cards to qualified patients, the Chicago Tribune reported, one of the final few steps required before full implementation.

At the moment, marijuana has already been grown and packaged in-state, but before selling, patients must have their cards, laboratories must test the product, and the six dispensaries already approved for business must gain access to a database of verified patients, the Tribune said. Those issues are up to the state to handle, the report explained, and officials expect sales to begin within two weeks.
