What Do We Owe Our Veterans?

“Thank you for your service.” It’s a common expression of gratitude that our country offers veterans. But is a quick “thank you” all we owe returning soldiers? In a society with an professional military, where fewer families have a connection to service, is there a growing disconnect between those who serve in the military and everyone else? 

For many veterans, returning to civilian life is not easy. High unemploymenthomeless rates stalk many veterans. And a massive government bureaucracy intended to serve veterans often works for some, is taken advantage of by others, and leaves many behind. 

What do we owe our veterans — including those who have served, those who have been injured or disabled and the families that have lost someone?
