Australia: Tolga farmer’s plan to grow medical cannabis

A THIRD-generation farmer from Tolga has put his hat in the ring to become Queensland’s first legal marijuana grower.

It comes as Dalrymple MP Shane Knuth questioned Health Minister Cameron Dick in Parliament yesterday regarding the state’s involvement in the cultivation trials of medical cannabis to help terminally ill adults and children with drug-resistant epilepsy.

Sugar cane farmer Joe Trimarchi said he saw the potential of growing cannabis locally to distribute across the eastern states.

“If there is any place in Australia or the universe to grow it, it would be the Atherton Tableland,” the 62-year-old said. “The Atherton Tableland has to be the original Garden of Eden – you can grow anything from a cactus to an olive tree.”
