Judge to sentence members of ring that sold “sand-weed-ches” and “burr-weed-os”

Members of a ring that smuggled more than $2 million in marijuana to San Antonio are to be sentenced today.

The case targeted Ramsey A. Cadena, who managed businesses that include Joint Venture Sandwich & Smoke Shop, a Corpus Christi restaurant that features hemp in its food. The business’ menu said the shop offers “sand-weed-ches” and “burr-weed-os.”

An indictment claims Cadena pocketed $315,000 in 2010, $180,000 in 2009, and made several deposits in 2014 totaling about $170,000 — all from the illegal activity. In all, before his conspiracy was dismantled, agents traced more than $2 million going into an “interstate funnel account,” which was set up to deposit money in amounts smaller than what is required to be reported by banks, records said.

The feds also filed paperwork aiming to seize a home in Helotes belonging to Cadena’s parents, records show, but where he lived.
