Greece: Advocates of marijuana decriminalization rally at City Hall

Hoisting and waving handmade signs reading “Decrim 4 Athens,” “We want decrim,” “We are not criminals” and “Stop the war on a plant,” about two dozen advocates of local marijuana decriminalization stepped up their efforts Tuesday evening in front of City Hall in downtown Athens, holding a demonstration in advance of the regular monthly meeting of the Athens-Clarke County mayor and commission.

For months now, members of the University of Georgia chapter of the Georgia C.A.R.E. Project (Campaign for Access, Reform and Education), have been using the public comment opportunities at meetings of the mayor and commission to press their case for a local ordinance that would give police the option of issuing citations to people caught with less than an ounce of marijuana, rather than arresting them and giving them a criminal record that could adversely affect job prospects and other aspects of their lives.
