Backers of legal pot measure turn in ballot signatures

The group supporting the measure says the bill would allow the possession of up to three ounces of marijuana for about a dozen conditions. A 3.75 percent state excise tax on retail marijuana sales would be imposed on top of the state's 6.25 percent sales tax.

Advocates supporting the Campaign to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol report that they have gathered over 100,000 signatures through statewide petitions gathered in the past two months, according to an AP report.

Senate President Stan Rosenberg said last week he expected voters would ultimately decide the issue.

If the group wants the measure on the June ballot, it must have roughly 13,500 signatures by February 15th. Qualified patients would also be permitted to purchase medical cannabis from state-licensed dispensaries or cultivate small amounts at home.
