Florida: Inching forward on medical marijuana

There is still time for the Legislature to legalize medical marijuana for sick Floridians. Lawmakers have an opportunity to pass a bill that would allow terminally ill patients to obtain marijuana for medical use. But they should go further and broaden access to medical marijuana to a larger group of patients in a way that reflects the intent of a proposed constitutional amendment.

Members of the House Appropriations subcommittee voted 9-2 this week to move HB 307 forward. The bill expands the 2015 Right to Try Act, which gave patients with a terminal illness and a year left to live the opportunity to try experimental drugs, products or devices that have completed Phase 1 of a clinical trial but have not gained full Food and Drug Administration approval. Under the new proposal, the same patients would be allowed to obtain medical marijuana from state-licensed growers and dispensers.
