Elizabeth Warren wants CDC to study marijuana as painkiller substitute

Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren thinks it’s high time health officials consider legalizing marijuana as a painkiller.

Warren, in a letter to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention head Thomas Frieden, argued that the “alarming” surge in painkiller addictions means marijuana should be explored as an alternative.

“Our country is faced with an opioid epidemic that only continues to grow at an alarming pace,” the Democratic lawmaker wrote in the Monday letter to Frieden. “Opioid abuse is a national concern and warrants swift an immediate action.”

The CDC reported last month that the number of fatal overdoses on opioid had more than doubled between 2000 and 2014.

The rate of overdoses jumped for both men and women, across all age groups and all ethnic groups.
