Marijuana and mental health: A curious diagnosis

The National Institute of Health (NIH) issued a news release Friday about rising rates of “marijuana use disorder” in America. That’s right — not marijuana addiction but rather “marijuana use disorder.”

“Marijuana use disorder is common in the United States, is often associated with other substance use disorders, behavioral problems, and disability, and goes largely untreated,” the release reads.

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), a branch of the NIH, recently conducted a study that shows 2.5 percent of adults “experienced marijuana use disorder in the past year.”

The study was published online Friday in the American Journal of Psychiatry, and analyzes data from the NIAAA’s 2012-2013 National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Condition.

Researchers interviewed more than 36,000 U.S. adults about alcohol use, drug use and “related psychiatric conditions,” and then applied diagnostic criteria for marijuana...
