Canadian PM Says Decriminalizing Marijuana Would Hinder Efforts to Fully Legalize the Drug

Canada won’t decriminalize marijuana before legalizing in 2017.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says his Liberal government will not decriminalize marijuana possession before moving to fully legalize the drug in 2017, as reported by The Huffington Post Canada.

Trudeau’s Liberal party campaigned and won national elections in 2015 on a platform that included marijuana legalization, which the Prime Minster promised to tackle “right away.”

Last week during the United Nations General Assembly Special Session on international drug policy, Canadian Federal Health Minister Jane Philpott announced the country plans to introduce legislation in the spring of 2017 that would fully legalize adult cannabis consumption, according to The Canadian Press.

“I am proud to stand up for our drug policy that is informed by solid scientific evidence and uses a lens of public health to maximize education and minimize harm,” Philpott said.
