California aims to revamp how it regulates medical pot industry

THE DETAILS

What: A package of three legislative bills dealing with licensing and regulating commercial medical marijuana cultivation, manufacturing, distribution, transportation, sales and testing

AB 243: Requires departments of food and agriculture; pesticide regulation; public health; fish and wildlife; and state water resources board to establish regulations and standards on medical marijuana and its cultivation, among other measures

AB 266: Enacts licensing and regulation and forms the Department of Consumer Affairs' Bureau of Medical Marijuana Regulation, among other measures

SB 643: Sets forth standards for physicians and surgeons in prescribing medical marijuana and prioritizes investigative and prosecutorial resources to identify and discipline professionals who recommend excessive doses or recommend it without a proper examination, among other measures

Implementation deadline: Jan. 1, 2018
