American Pain Society Issues White Paper on Medical Marijuana

In response to growing public interest and support of medical marijuana, the American Pain Society has issued a white paper to help assist pain physicians with marijuana-related clinical issues. Published in the Journal of Pain, the paper covers a wide range of opinions on medical marijuana from various medical experts.

“The authors of the paper span the spectrum from legalization advocates to those who do not even support certification for medical marijuana, so this forced us to really have a balanced look at our clinical experiences,” said coauthor Seddon R. Savage, MD, to Medscape Medical News.

Physicians are urged to work within state laws and to be aware of the federal law and its implications. To better help assist patients, physicians are recommended to advise patients on which strains would be best for them, whenever possible.
