Toronto: Marijuana dispensaries under review at Licensing and Standards Committee

The Licensing and Standards Committee is set to debate and review the current state of marijuana dispensaries in Toronto on Monday.

The meeting follows a string of raids linked to the proliferation of pot storefronts in neighbourhoods across the city.

Toronto police executed four search warrants and made 23 arrests related to the marijuana dispensary crackdown last Thursday.

A coalition of marijuana dispensaries have said the raids on the pot shops were a “major mistake” and have called for charges to be dropped against those arrested. This comes just weeks after authoritiesraided 43 locations and arrested 90 people in May, including shop owners and employees.

The police operation nicknamed Project Claudia comes as the federal Liberal government continues to further its efforts on marijuana legalization in Canada.

Committee members are expected to review regulations governing medical marijuana use and the proximity of dispensaries to schools, educational and childcare facilities.
