Queensland Issues Australia’s First Medical Cannabis Guidelines

On Jan. 26, 2017, Queensland Health announced the release of initial medical cannabis guidelines for medical practitioners in Queensland, Australia.

“These new Guidance documents provide health practitioners with information about what is allowed to be prescribed, the form it will come in and information about dosing and direction on the best sources of information that can be obtained in relation to medicinal cannabis prescribing,” said Cameron Dick, Minister for Health and Minister for Ambulance Services.

Queensland Health drafted the guidelines in conjunction with stakeholders, medical and pharmaceutical experts, the Australian Medical Association Queensland and medical cannabis researchers, among others.

The guidelines are made up of three documents:

  • The first document, “The Clinical Guidance: For the use of Medicinal Cannabis Products,” covers medical cannabis treatment options and indicates that prescribing and dispensing can begin in the state of Queensland on March 1, 2017;
  • the second document, “The Medicinal Cannabis Access and Use in Queensland,” addresses how practitioners
