Last year, the first-ever Cannabis Wedding Expo was held in Denver, Colorado, bringing hundreds of soon-to-be-newlyweds together with 35 companies that offer cannabis-centric wedding services.
As the social stigma surrounding cannabis continues to fade, the minds behind the Cannabis Wedding Expo are prepared for a major expansion in 2017. This year, the exhibition will be hosted in Denver (February 19), Portland (March 26), and San Francisco (April 30), and is expected to welcome around 1,500 total attendees and 75 different companies.
The growth of the Cannabis Wedding Expo hints at a trend where open bars at weddings are replaced or complemented with various cannabis services. Though these cannabis-centric weddings have primarily been limited to Colorado in the past, recreational legalization in California, Nevada, and beyond has created a viable market for this evergreen wedding service.
“Cannabis provides another option where you can still partake recreationally, you can still have a lot of fun, but you don’t have to consume alcohol or party in that type of way,” Cannabis Wedding Expo co-founder and CEO Philip Wolf said to Civilized. “It can also create a certain mood for an event which is different than that created by alcohol.”
The expansion of the Cannabis Wedding Expo proves that cannabis weddings are becoming increasing accepted by professional event planners. Along with CEO Philip Wolf, who is also the founder of the Colorado cannabis tour group Cultivating Spirits, the exhibition’s team includes Bec Koop and Madelyne Kelly, the two co-owners of Irie Weddings & Events.
The duo’s cannabis-friendly wedding service provides much more than just the buds, they can also take on the stressful task of event planning. Operating out of Colorado, Irie Weddings & Events offer a slew of services, from simple consultation to orchestrating the entire cannabis wedding. To prevent overconsumption, the Cannabis Wedding Expo will also have cannabis professionals educating attendees on safety and moderation.
All in all, the Cannabis Wedding Expo shows that marijuana can be tastefully infused into a wedding cake, elegantly placed within the bouquet, and even sparked during the ceremonious toast to the newlywed couple. If you and your significant other live in a state with recreational cannabis and are thinking about tying the knot in the near future, you might want to consider mixing a bit a marijuana into your matrimony.
