A bill that's now in Congress could protect Colorado's marijuana laws.

It comes just as the White House hinted at a crackdown on recreational marijuana earlier this week.

It's H.R. 975 and it was introduced by Dana Rohrabacher (R-Calif.).

The bill is referred to as the "Respect State Marijuana Laws" act. Its purpose is to protect people from being prosecuted under the controlled substance act as long as they are following their state`s laws regarding marijuana.

It has been co-sponsored by 14 members of the house including two Colorado congressmen:  Republican Mike Coffman and Democrat Jared Polis.

"It`s absurd to use our limited federal law enforcement in some kind of mass enforcement action which is what Sean Spicer hinted at in his remarks the other day," Polis said.

"I just think it`s very important that this legislation pass and sends a message to the president that Colorado has a right to make its own decisions regarding marijuana and this is something that I as a member of congress will protect," Coffman said.

The bill is in its early stages as it was introduced in early February. It will have to pass through a committee in the House next in order to advance for consideration in the Senate.
