Annacis Island will soon be home to much more than industrial sites and wastewater treatment plants. 

Zenabis West is the second company in the Lower Mainland to be issued a cultivation licence by Health Canada to produce medical cannabis, and will soon open its facility in the industrial area along the Fraser River.

The company, operated by International Herbs Medical Marijuana Ltd. (IHMML), has spent three years preparing, and is one of few in the country to be issued a licence on its first pre-licence inspection, according to a news release published earlier today.

The 25,000-square-foot facility is one of two IHMML hopes to open within the coming months. While the Delta facility has been granted a licence to cultivate plants, the company has not sought a licence to produce oils, or to sell its products. 

It's maritime counterpart, Zenabis East, is located near the village of Atholville, New Brunswick, on a 20-acre site, and boasts 393,000 square feet of space. An inspection by Health Canada will take place at that facility in July. 

"The company has already received overwhelming support from the communities in Delta, BC and its surrounding areas," says the report.

Zenabis says it's also the only company in Canada "to have received funding from both a provincial government and a First Nations' government."

The company aims to sell medical cannabis at a competitive price.
