Any local businesses hoping to cash in on the upcoming retail cannabis industry will soon have their chance.
The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario will be opening up an application lottery system at 12:01 a.m. tomorrow morning.
The results are expected to be announced by next weekend.
The AGCO will only be giving out 25 licences in the lottery. The provincial government has said a widespread supply issue is the reason for the small number of available licences.
Many people's reaction to the news of legal marijuana shops is mixed. Some think it could be good for the community.
"I just figure Kitchener's a pretty diverse neighbourhood," local resident Preston tells 570 NEWS. "We have all sorts of people with all sorts of different sorts of interests. This is legal now so why not encourage that sort of diversity in downtown Kitchener?"
Any interested applicants will have to pay a non-refundable fee of 75-dollars when submitting their application.
Retail cannabis stores are expected to begin opening in April. Any municipalities in Ontario have until January 22 to opt out of retail cannabis locations.
