B.C. has the highest use of cannabis in the country
B.C is no stranger to cannabis and a new UN report says the province is smoking more than any other province.
The numbers don’t come as a surprise for people out on the street in Vancouver today. “That’s sort of the perception and stereotype in B.C., we think of as the home of cannabis consumption in Canada because the climate is more favourable,” says Brad.
More than a quarter of people in B.C. over the age of 15 report using cannabis in 2017.
The 2019 World Drug Report released by the United Nation’s Office on Drug and Crime on June 26 reported higher numbers of Cannabis use across the country between the 2011 and 2017.
The report shows a dramatic increase of cannabis use, with it rising 62 per cent during these years in Canada.
It says the cannabis use rate in the is rising among adults over the age of 20 while it is decreasing for those under 19.
One resident says he’s travelled quite a bit and noticed cannabis use in most places.
“I think Canadians seem like we’re celebrating our recent legalizaiton more, but globally marijuanna use is pretty balanced,” says Sammy.
He adds that this doesn’t factor in people avoiding reporting cannabis use in country’s where it’s not legal.
“I feel like in other places, people do it indoors or around corners because it’s illegal. And nobody would say that they smoke pot where it’s illegal,” he says.
Cannabis is reported as the most widely-used drug around the world, but under 4 per cent of the world population between the ages of 15 and 64 say they consumed cannabis at least once in 2017.
In India the consumer rate sits just over three percent and is even lower in Asia which keeps the global percentages low.
