The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is investigating an arson that led to the discovery of a violation of the federal Cannabis Act, reports CTV Windsor.

Officers with the OPP’s Kingsville detachment, south of Windsor, were dispatched to 1300 block of Road 3 East on Monday morning, shortly after 4 a.m.

Ontario’s Office of the Fire Marshal has been called in and is investigating the fire as arson. According to reports, the preliminary investigation also led to the discovery of a violation of the Cannabis Act.

According to Blackburn News, police believe the fire was set intentionally. Other sources told Blackburn News that the fire occurred in a greenhouse.

There are a number of cannabis producers that operate in the area.

The OPP’s Community Street Crimes Unit and Provincial Joint Forces Cannabis Enforcement Team are investigating the alleged violation of the federal act. Anyone with information is asked to contact OPP or Crime Stoppers.

Last year, a barn fire in Northumberland County revealed an illicit cannabis-growing operation. As part of that investigation, officials also discovered a second cannabis grow in a nearby barn.

In 2019, a fire investigation in Montreal led to the discovery of multiple cannabis grow rooms in an apartment in the borough of LaSalle. The cause of the fire was unknown.
