A Welsh man’s business selling illegally imported Canadian cannabis to patrons across the U.K. was busted after the smell of success proved too strong.
Bradley Furness, 26, is facing a suspended sentence after running what the prosecution referred to as a “pot distribution centre” from his home in Aberystwyth, Wales.
Suspicions were piqued in June 2017 when a worker at a postal centre noticed a distinctive odour wafting from a mail bag containing 52 similarly labeled padded envelopes, Wales Online reports. Inspectors opened the packages, which were each revealed to contain sealed packages of weed, alongside a polite “thank you” note.
Altogether, the packages contained a total of more than 215 grams of flower.
Less than two weeks later, a package addressed to Furness containing approximately four and a half kilograms of Canadian cannabis was intercepted by authorities en route from the Great White North, Prosecutor Georgina Buckley told the Swansea Crown Court. The package was labeled as audio equipment.
A subsequent police raid on Furness’ home revealed 18 glass jars containing various cultivars of cannabis flower, along with bags, scales, as well as a stack of envelopes and “thank you” cards. A further five kilograms of flower were confiscated from the house.
Records revealed that Furness was accepting payments under the radar via means such as Paypal.
Furness admitted in court to charges of attempting to supply cannabis and possession of cannabis with intent to supply, as well as an importation offence. He was sentenced to two years in prison suspended for 18 months.
While medical cannabis is legal in the U.K. with an order from a specialist physician, adult-use cannabis is labeled a Class B drug along with substances such as ketamine, codeine, amphetamine, and barbiturates. Offenders convicted of supplying Class B drugs can face penalties of up to 14 years in prison and a fine.
