U.K. officers seize more than 1,000 cannabis plants from commercial property.
The recent seizure of 1,000 cannabis plants hidden in a commercial premises in Rainham, U.K. “will undoubtedly have an impact on drug supply on London’s streets,” police say.
The large discovery in the community, located about 26 kilometres from downtown London, is estimated to have a street value of £1 million ($1.7 million), the Metropolitan Police report in a statement.
Upon executing the drugs warrant and entering the premises, the police quickly determined the space was being used as a cannabis factory . More than 1,000 cannabis plants were seized and removed. There have not yet been any arrests in connection with the discovery.
“A seizure of this magnitude will undoubtedly have an impact on drugs supply on London’s streets,” Detective Sergeant Owen Morgan of the East Area Command said in the statement.
“We know that there is a link between drugs and violent crime, with both having a devastating impact on our communities.”
Morgan urged citizens to report any suspicious activity as quickly as possible, pointing out “all information received from the public is acted upon.”
This past August, Preston, U.K. police found another multi-million-dollar grow-op with about 3,500 weed plants after receiving tips from concerned citizens.
In February, the West Yorkshire Police seized hundreds of cannabis plants worth tens of thousands of pounds in Dewsbury, making the confiscation the police service’s ninth in just eight weeks.
“The progress made to date “is only possible with the fantastic information the public provides us, enabling us to develop intelligence and obtain warrants from the courts,” a police official said at the time.
In the summer of 2020, the Northampton Police also thanked the public for its phones ringing more than usual to report suspected illegal grow-ops. Chief Constable Simon Blatchly said that over a six-week period, officers had been busting grows on cannabis farms and in empty buildings.
Throughout the U.K., large illegal cannabis grow-ops have been found hidden in residential, commercial or industrial properties, some of these vacant. The sites have included everything from a home to a retail store, former men’s club, an old bar and even a wedding venue.
Recreational cannabis remains illegal throughout the U.K.
