Man from Canada nabbed after reportedly trying to bring 40 kilograms of marijuana into country.
A man from Canada was taken into custody at the Edinburgh Airport after border officers found him with about 40 kilograms of cannabis on Jan. 22.
The 27-year-old from Toronto has since been charged with attempting to import controlled drugs into Scotland, notes the National Crime Agency.
“Sentences can increase if you are dealing drugs or supplying them, even if it’s just to friends with no money changing hands,” the information states, adding the top penalty for intent to supply or deal cannabis ups the potential prison time to 14 years.
After being found with the illegal drug, officers from the joint NCA and Police Scotland Organised Crime Partnership were called in to interview the man.
It is not clear what the accused planned to do with the cannabis.
The NCA reports, nonetheless, that “most forms of illegal drugs originate overseas and are trafficked into the UK via various routes, including container shipping, yachts and small boats, light aircraft, vehicle traffic from continental Europe, airline passengers and the post and fast parcels.”
Profits are high at all stages of drug trafficking, the information points out, “but particularly for those who can access the drugs in their source country. Criminals from the Balkans dominate the cocaine market, but British traffickers remain a significant threat.”
That said, Canada is often cited as a source country for illegal cannabis shipments into ports or through the mail in nearby places like Ireland.
Earlier this month, K9 officers Bailey and Sam sniffed out a host of illegal drugs inside packages sent to Dublin and originating in the U.S., Canada, Spain, the U.K. and the Netherlands.
