Staffing for Cultivation Facilities: It's About Acquiring the Right Skill Set

Working in the Cannabis Industry, one universal truth reigns above all others: Marijuana growers are not the most humble bunch.

Anyone who grows marijuana, grows the best marijuana. I’ve met cultivators with root rot and sickly hydroponic plants claiming to yield four lbs./light. I’ve also met cultivators that set their HPS lights one inch above their canopy and claim to get three lbs./light. And I’ve met people who pump more than 3,000 PPMs of nutrients into their feed reservoirs and claim to get two lbs./light.

Claims such as these, as well as my background in communications and workforce development in the building trades, encouraged me to pursue hiring industry virgins with a real eagerness to learn.

The marijuana gold rush is in full effect, depending on what part of the country you live in. For those on the west coast, cannabis has been decriminalized and legalized for recreational use along the entire Pacific Rim, with the exception of California — though it looks like 2016 might be the year legislation passes in the country’s most populous state.

Budtending: There's A Class For That At Herbal Risings In Phoenix

A few years ago, you might hear the name Herbal Risings Cannabis College and picture students in beanies and tie-dye T-shirts fighting over the last bag of Doritos. A class called “Budtending 101” might get a few wisecracks.

How quickly things change: When Chad Olshavsky moved to Arizona with his wife in 2012, they founded a training program that was rigorous and professional. Olshavsky wants to groom dispensary agents with medical knowledge, just like your neighborhood pharmacist.

Oregonian to OLCC: Allow Out-of-State Marijuana Business Investment

When crafting a marijuana legalization measure, it is necessary to balance several objectives, including: personal freedom and public safety; tax revenue and responsible use; free speech and advertising restrictions designed to keep marijuana out of the hands of minors; and out-of-state competition vs. protecting in-state mom and pops. When drafting Measure 91, we co-authors carefully considered these various interests and felt that we had developed a sensible law that would stake a moderate middle on these issues and move the state of Oregon forward with a cannabis industry that would follow in the footsteps of our successful microbrewery and winery industries, while most importantly ending the arrest and citation of thousands of people for marijuana offenses.

The women in weed who could make legal marijuana a billion-dollar industry

Legal marijuana could be the first billion-dollar industry not dominated by men, writes Gogo Lidz.

It seems fitting that a plant called Mary Jane could smash the patriarchy. After all, only female marijuana flowers produce cannabinoids like the potent THC chemical that gets users buzzed. Pot farmers strive to keep all their crops female through flowering female clones of one plant, called the Mother. And women are moving into the pot business so quickly that they could make it the first billion-dollar industry that isn’t dominated by men.
