Recreational marijuana is beginning its slow creep across America, beginning in states like Colorado and Washington — which have become total hellscapes, obviously — and an entire startup ecosystem is sprouting up in order to reap the rewards of the inevitable home gardening revolution.

SARASOTA COUNTY — In November – when Florida’s medical marijuana amendment came up two points short of the 60 percent approval that would give it the force of constitutional law – AltMed LLC was forced to confront an uncomfortable truth.

Over the past decade, the legal wins enjoyed by marijuana and its supporters have far outnumbered the losses.

Despite Florida failing to become the 24th state to legalize medical marijuana in last year's election (by a mere two percentage points), we've still seen a rapid rise in the number of new states willing to give medical marijuana a try in recent years, and four states (plus Washington D.C.) experimenting with the legalization of marijuana for recreational purposes.

In 1986, the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) issued the Coordinated Framework for the Regulation of Biotechnology, which outlined a comprehensive Federal regulatory policy for ensuring the safety of biotechnology products. The Framework was updated in 1992.  While the current regulatory system for biotechnology products effectively protects health and the environment, advances in science and technology since 1992 have been altering the product landscape.
