Cannabis-infused tea and chocolate — but don’t expect candy floss or breath strips — as edible products come to stores

And the battle begins in earnest.

With the introduction of edible, beverage, vape and other new products over the coming months, the country’s legal pot industry will finally bring both passive fists to the fight with its shadowy, illicit counterpart, experts say.

And the range of confections, booze alternatives and vaping products that will increasingly pack the shelves of pot stores — with the first wave expected to hit in January — is likely to attract vast numbers of new users to the pleasures and pitfalls of cannabis.

Struggle to open Tecumseh, Ont. hemp shop due to 'massive confusion' in cannabis industry

Opening a hemp-based business for two moms in Tecumseh, Ont. has involved more than a year of red tape and roadblocks, largely because of the connection to cannabis.

Finding a bank, insurance and a landlord wasn't easy, according to Melissa Boow and Tiffany Rizok, and nearly forced them to give up trying. The owners constantly had to explain that both hemp and marijuana are cultivated from the cannabis sativa plant family, but that hemp contains virtually none of the elements of the tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) compound found in marijuana that makes people high.

"Everybody's scared and not realizing that there's a difference," said Boow. "For every step you take forward, you take two steps back fighting. It's not fair. It shouldn't be like this."

B.C. cannabis shop covers window with photo of frontier Mountie. RCMP wants it removed

Jeff Weaver has been jumping through the legal hoops required to set up Jimmy's Cannabis shop in Cranbrook, B.C., but now an image of a famous Mountie Weaver used to cover one of the shop's windows has caught the attention of law enforcement.

Cannabis stores in B.C. are required to cover their windows so the interior can't be seen from the street.

Many shops use plain, frosted white coverings, but Weaver opted for a collection of black and white historical images representative of the Cranbrook area.

One of the windows depicts Sam Steele, known as the man who helped bring law and order to the west in the late 19th century.

Top Cannabis Stocks for December

Cannabis stocks have had a tough year. Since the summer, most marijuana ETFs have been cut in half. Yet the long-term promise remains clear. Many analysts expect global sales to hit $100 billion by 2030, representing 1,000% growth.

If you want to invest in cannabis stocks, it pays to have a multi-year vision. Still, short-term market gyrations can make some companies a bargain, and it’s important to capitalize before prices revert.

Cannabis edibles, extracts and topicals are coming ... eventually

Hundreds of recreational cannabis edibles, extracts and topicals will hit B.C. shelves soon but it’s unclear whether that will be in time to bring Christmas cheer.

Regulations to make those products legal came into effect on Oct. 17, 2019, one year after the federal legalization of dried cannabis, oil and seeds. But producers weren’t immediately able to ship them to the B.C. Cannabis Stores and website, and private stores.

Cannabis at work, 1 year after legalization

A year into legalized recreational cannabis, and now with the legalization of cannabis edibles on Oct. 17, 2019, employers continue to wrestle with the question of how to strike the right balance between a safe and productive workplace and the privacy and human rights of workers.

As courts and arbitrators continue to clarify (and in some cases, muddy) the law, there are several things we know:

Cannabis in the workplace is no different than any other potentially impairing drug: The overarching question is whether the worker is fit for duty.

Canadian cannabis cultivators spy opportunity in Europe

The European Union’s nascent medical cannabis market is ready to expand with Canadian cannabis cultivators.

New Frontier Data estimates that the potential European market for legal medical cannabis exceeds $42bn (~€38.02bn).1 Currently, Europe does not cultivate enough cannabis to supply the existing and growing demand. In order to meet market needs for medical cannabis the EU must supplement locally produced cannabis with products from international sources.
