Sudbury: Pot edibles cafe moves ahead

Last week, senators voted to pass the federal government's bill legalizing recreational marijuana.

And on Wednesday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced marijuana will be legal in Canada on Oct. 17.

But even before those announcements, Sudbury’s Jason LaFauci and his After Dark Cafe and Edibles became the Nickel City’s first edibles cafe, receiving the city's stamp of approval last Monday.

Edibles are food products infused with marijuana.

So once pot possession, home growing and sales for adults is legal, LaFauci and staff, who currently run catering for a regular food menu at the old Mine Mill Hall, will open up their edibles menu to recreational users.

Profits and perils of the new Canadian pot economy

"Eyes shone, cheeks were flushed, the inner light of universal benevolence broke out on every face in happy, friendly smiles."

That's Aldous Huxley in his 1932 novel Brave New World, describing "soma," a drug provided by the state to help citizens cope in his fictional dystopia.

If you are looking for something to take the sting out of the current round of gloomy news, we now know the date that recreational cannabis will become legal in Canada: Oct. 17. What comes after remains unwritten.

How Canada will regulate legal cannabis: A flowchart

After Canada legalizes recreational cannabis on October 17, 2018, consumers will have two legal routes to access marijuana: an existing medical cannabis regime, plus a new recreational cannabis regime.

Within those parallel systems, people will be able to buy cannabis or grow their own.

In both cases, commercial cannabis production will be subject to federal regulation via Health Canada — but recreational cannabis will be sold and distributed differently across the provinces and territories, while the sale and distribution of medical cannabis will remain under federal jurisdiction.

Doug Ford eyes more private sector involvement in sale of marijuana

Ontario premier-designate Doug Ford says he sees a role for government-run stores in the sale of cannabis but will consult with his caucus and municipalities as he considers opening the market up to more private-sector involvement.

The province’s outgoing Liberal government had planned to give the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) a monopoly on the sale of recreational cannabis, with 40 stand-alone stores and online sales set to open this year under a subsidiary of the LCBO called the Ontario Cannabis Store (OCS). Mr. Ford, who will be sworn in on June 29, said on Thursday he is open to changing his predecessor’s plans.

PM Trudeau says cannabis will be legal in Canada on Oct. 17

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says recreational marijuana will become legal in Canada on Oct. 17.

Trudeau made the proclamation during question period Wednesday, saying the provinces wanted more time to implement the new regime than originally anticipated.

"We heard from provinces and territories who told us they needed more time to transition to this new framework, so our government will continue to work in full partnership with them, to ensure the smooth and orderly implementation of this new law across Canada," Trudeau told reporters during an end-of-session news conference.

Canada's legal cannabis market by the numbers

The Senate gave the go-ahead Tuesday for the legalization of recreational marijuana by passing Bill C-45, also known as the Cannabis Act.

Before the bill becomes law, it need to pass one more formality – royal assent from the Governor General. Once this happens, provinces and territories are expected to be given eight to 12 weeks to prepare before the law is officially implemented.

But questions still remain over the amount of revenue the legal marijuana market will actually generate and how consumption habits may shift as cannabis enters the legal realm.

Here’s a look at some key numbers that have surfaced so far relating to the legal pot market.

New Brunswick producer fights tainted cannabis lawsuit in court

3-day hearing underway to determine whether class action can go ahead.

New Brunswick's largest licensed supplier of medical marijuana is trying to fend off a class-action lawsuit at a three-day hearing that started Tuesday in Halifax.

Organigram, which employs some 300 people in Moncton, is accused of making customers sick by supplying them with cannabis that was tainted with unapproved pesticides in 2016.

"One of the things we want for people who purchased contaminated products is to get their money back," said the plaintiff's lawyer, Ray Wagner.

"The second thing is that we're also looking for punitive damages to punish Organigram for what they did, we say, knowingly or recklessly, using banned pesticides to improve commercial value of their product."

Canada becomes second country to legalize cannabis use

Canada is to become the second country in the world to fully legalise marijuana, after the senate approved legislation paving the way for recreational cannabis to be legally bought and sold within the next two or three months.

“We’ve just witnessed a very historic vote that ends 90 years of prohibition,” senator Tony Dean told reporters on Tuesday after the vote to pass the Cannabis Act.

“It ends 90 years of needless criminalisation, it ends a prohibition model that inhibited and discouraged public health and community health in favour of just-say-no approaches that simply failed young people miserably.”
