NB to set legal marijuana age at 19, sale through crown corporation

An interim report released on Wednesday has outlined what the legalization of marijuana might look like in New Brunswick.

Recommendations include a minimum age of 19 to buy and possess marijuana, regulating and selling cannabis through a crown corporation and a personal possession limit of 30 grams.

“Your government is working to ensure a successful approach to the legalization of recreational cannabis by prioritizing public health and safety concerns while maximizing the economic opportunities presented by this emerging sector,” said Health Minister Victor Boudreau in a press release.

Orlando International Airport bans medical marijuana

It is now illegal to have any type of marijuana, even medical marijuana, at the Orlando International Airport.

The Greater Orlando Aviation Authority Board unanimously approved the medical marijuana ban Wednesday.

A draft policy published this week by the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority puts medical marijuana users at risk of arrest when flying out of Orlando International Airport, despite 71 percent of Florida voters choosing to legalize weed for medical uses last November.

Should Alcohol and Cannabis Have Separate DUI Laws?

When it comes to the perils of cannabis and driving, there’s a lot to take into consideration. In an illegal state, getting caught with cannabis in the car can easily earn you a possession charge. Consumers in legal states face risks as well; charges of driving under the influence of cannabis can occur regardless of whether or not the driver is impaired. Many tests to detect THC levels in one’s system don’t account for the length of time cannabis metabolites remain in human cells, which means a driver may not have consumed cannabis in weeks but can still retain enough THC in their body to be found guilty of a DUI.

As Cannabis Comes Out of Black Market, Regulators Face Scrutiny

Take a black-market business that relies on cash. Move the business out of the shadows by giving it government oversight. Hire new regulators to keep watch on the business, all without any experience regulating a brand-new industry.

The result can be a recipe for government corruption.

Recent cases in Colorado and Washington are the first known instances of current or former cannabis regulators being accused of having improper dealings with the industry. The two recreational marijuana states are the nation’s oldest, approving legal marijuana in defiance of federal law in 2012.

Vermont Marijuana Legalization Stalls in the House, Fails Again

Vermont lawmakers once again came close — but once again failed — to pass legislation to legalize marijuana Wednesday during a one-day special veto session.

The legal weed bill passed the Senate easily, as it has the past two years. But the bill hit a wall in the House, where an effort to suspend rules to bring the bill to the floor fell far short.

"It is our best chance to pass legalization of small amounts of marijuana," Senate Judiciary Committee chair Dick Sears (D-Bennington) told fellow senators before their vote early Wednesday evening.

Massachusetts House OKs Bill That Would Redo Recreational Marijuana Law

A bill that would repeal and replace the recreational marijuana law approved by the state's voters in November cleared the House late Wednesday. Critics who lashed out at the proposal accused lawmakers of ignoring the will of the electorate and taking a hostile approach to the legal cannabis industry.

The Senate was poised to take up its own version of the bill, one calling for more modest revisions in the current law, on Thursday, setting the stage for negotiations between the chambers over a final version lawmakers hope to send to Republican Gov. Charlie Baker by July 1.

The House bill, approved on a 126-28 vote, would raise the tax on retail marijuana sales from 12 percent to 28 percent.

UK: #Weed4Corbyn?

Whilst the shockwaves of last week’s General Election continue to rumble on, many reformers are turning their attention to what all this upheaval and uncertainty means for the future of drug policy in the UK.

It seems very safe to assume that a Conservative government, particularly one led by Theresa May, and certainly one propped up by the Democratic Unionist Party, is very unlikely to make any meaningful change to the decades-old policy of outright prohibition.

Albania Grapples with Cannabis, a Hurdle to EU Accession

As Albania gears up for elections, one huge challenge facing the Balkan country has been low on the campaign agendas: the scourge of its cannabis fields, which threatens to hinder EU accession.

Morocco may be the leading source of cannabis resin, but mountainous Albania is the main supplier of herbal cannabis trafficked to the European Union, says the bloc’s law enforcement agency, Europol.

Despite Albania’s attempts to crack down on the illicit but lucrative trade, recent international reports said the scourge is yet to be brought under control – and that the criminal gangs behind it are escaping justice.

Six Ways California's New State Law Will Change the Cannabis Industry

California lawmakers’ approval of the state budget on last week came with a piece of attached legislation with major implications for the cannabis industry, which is in its first year as a fully regulated business sector.

SB 94 – which passed with a 31-to-3 vote – essentially merges the Medical Cannabis Regulation and Safety Act and Proposition 64, the Adult Use of Marijuana Act, into one regulatory framework that will govern both medical and recreational cannabis use. The budget rider bill, along with the rest of the budget, is currently awaiting the governor’s signature.

Recreational Sales of Marijuana in Nevada in Limbo Following Tuesday Ruling

Recreational sales of marijuana in Nevada may not begin next month after all.

A judge added to the uncertainty Tuesday when he extended a temporary order preventing the state from issuing pot distribution licenses to existing medical marijuana dispensaries so they can begin recreational sales July 1.

Carson City District Judge James Wilson said in a 11-page ruling Tuesday that the ballot measure voters approved in November dictates that licensed alcohol wholesalers have the exclusive rights to pot distribution licenses for 18 months.
