Utah group starts medical marijuana ballot initiative push

Medical marijuana advocates in Utah are planning to try to get an initiative on the November 2018 ballot that would allow the drug to be used for treatment.

Advocates say they're done waiting for state lawmakers, who have rejected passing a broad medical pot law during the last three consecutive sessions. Medical marijuana advocate Christine Stenquist says the legislature's decisions over the last few years have made it clear that lawmakers have no desire to move forward with legalizing the drug, so they're going to do it themselves.

Here are things to know about the ballot initiative and the work over the last few years in Utah to get medical marijuana legalized:

Alberta students ask province to spend any marijuana taxes on mental health

A group of University of Alberta students want the province to roll any tax revenue raised from the legal sale of marijuana into mental health and addiction programs.

Student Advocates for Public Health say these programs are badly underfunded at a time when substance abuse is costing Alberta's health-care system about $1 billion per year.

The group says once the federal government follows through with its plan to legalize pot, Alberta should direct any provincial taxes raised from sales into bolstering services.

Colorado: A proposed state “crackdown” on marijuana home grows is getting weaker as it moves along

A Colorado plan to crack down on homegrown pot is rapidly heading to the governor’s desk after lawmakers changed the bill to give pot patients more leeway.

A Senate committee vote 5-0 to set a statewide limit of 12 plants per residential property. That’s down from 99 plants under current law.

The bill was changed to give medical marijuana patients and their caregivers up to 24 plants, if they register with the state and with local authorities. Currently, registration is required only if patients have more than 99 plants.

Canada: Growing your own medical marijuana just got really complicated

Canada's biggest licensed producer of medical marijuana launched its first collection of feminized seeds for sale last week.

In response to a federal court ruling, Health Canada reintroduced "provisions for individuals to produce a limited amount of cannabis for their own medical purposes or to designate someone to produce it for them" as part of the Access to Cannabis for Medical Purposes Regulations (ACMPR) last August.

But even through ACMPR, growing your own medicine may be way more challenging than the three or four clicks required to shop online for your weed.
