SUE Paynter and her daughter Jasmin couldn't be in a fresh photo or video for this story today.

The reason.

Jasmin has been floored by yet another gruelling day of epileptic seizures.

The 12-year-old suffers Dravet syndrome, a rare form of catastrophic epilepsy.

As Jasmin slept, her mother, Lake Cootharaba resident Sue, spoke with hope in her voice, at the thought of marijuana being legally grown, regulated and distributed to those with chronic, terminal or painful conditions.

Jennifer and Bryan Conforti characterized their daughter’s meltdowns as “demonic,” and said they were afraid to hold their child. “My arms are covered with bruises and cuts from her trying to rip my arms off of her,” Jennifer said last month. “If she can’t bite herself, she’ll bite us.”

Canada: Let public health drive legal marijuana process

After years of debate, it appears that we now have a federal government that is serious about legalizing marijuana. According to the Canadian Community Health Survey, about a half of Peterborough's adults have tried marijuana or cannabis at least once in their lives, with more than a third of Peterborough high school students reporting the same in a recent study. The numbers of people using it on a regular basis are much lower, but there are concerns that use will increase and with that, a variety of associated harms as well.
