Michigan’s move to issue its first licences to businesses planning to grow and sell recreational cannabis could be the death knell for a small, southern Ontario town’s chance at becoming a pot tourist destination.

Windsor, Ont., is a border town connected to Michigan., the state south of the border that will let the sale of recreational marijuana proceed on Dec. 1.

Windsor Ward 3 Coun. Rino Bortolin told the Windsor Star that Ontario’s slow and “ridiculous” plan to establish brick-and-mortar cannabis shops around the province is to blame.

The U.S. House Judiciary Committee -- which is charged with overseeing the administration of justice within federal courts and law enforcement agencies -- approved a bill on Wednesday that decriminalizes marijuana at the federal level. Multiple landlords are reported to have received letters informing them that their properties are being used as an “instrument of unlawful activity” and giving them a specific time frame to comply with provincial law or face property seizure under the Civil Forfeiture Act.

Edible cannabis products will be legal in Quebec as of Dec. 5, but people will have to wait until Jan. 1 to get access to them.

According to an email sent by an Ontario Cannabis Store (OCS) executive to Canadian licensed producers late Tuesday that was obtained by BNN Bloomberg, the new measure to allow for a “third-party centralized distribution” system comes following feedback the government-run agency solicited last month after it engaged with the industry to determine whether it should get out of its wholesale cannabis business. It is unclear when the OCS plans to let a privately-run company handle product distribution.
