Michigan rolls out recreational cannabis licences, killing Windsor’s chance at becoming a pot tourist destination

Michigan’s move to issue its first licences to businesses planning to grow and sell recreational cannabis could be the death knell for a small, southern Ontario town’s chance at becoming a pot tourist destination.

Windsor, Ont., is a border town connected to Michigan., the state south of the border that will let the sale of recreational marijuana proceed on Dec. 1.

Windsor Ward 3 Coun. Rino Bortolin told the Windsor Star that Ontario’s slow and “ridiculous” plan to establish brick-and-mortar cannabis shops around the province is to blame.

Cannabis stocks soar as Bill to legalize marijuana approved

Cannabis investors received some exciting news this week.

The U.S. House Judiciary Committee -- which is charged with overseeing the administration of justice within federal courts and law enforcement agencies -- approved a bill on Wednesday that decriminalizes marijuana at the federal level. If approved by the House of Representatives and Senate, the bill could pave the way for full-scale legalization of marijuana in the United States.

Authorities use controversial law to target Saint John landlords renting to illicit dispensaries

Police in Saint John, New Brunswick are trying a new tactic to eradicate illicit cannabis dispensaries: target their landlords.

Multiple landlords are reported to have received letters informing them that their properties are being used as an “instrument of unlawful activity” and giving them a specific time frame to comply with provincial law or face property seizure under the Civil Forfeiture Act.

Ontario mulls overhauling pot shop system in 2020 as sales lag

Relief may finally be coming for cannabis producers that have been stymied by the lack of legal retail stores in the country’s most populous province.

The Ontario government is considering a plan that would abandon the maligned lottery process that has left it with only two-dozen legal pot shops, and instead pivot as early as January to a system that could lay the groundwork for up to a thousand stores in the province, according to a person directly familiar with the matter.

Cannabis edibles available in Quebec only as of Jan. 1

Edible cannabis products will be legal in Quebec as of Dec. 5, but people will have to wait until Jan. 1 to get access to them.

Quebec announced its regulations surrounding edibles and extracts on Wednesday. While there’s no legal impediment to the Société québécoise du cannabis (SQDC) selling those products starting Dec. 5, the provincial cannabis retailer wants to take its time and make sure everything is done properly.

Why Health Canada inspectors may have missed unlicensed cannabis growing — twice

A surge in the number of cannabis producers coupled with a large number of site-amendment requests in preparation for Cannabis 2.0 have left Health Canada “overwhelmed” over the past year, and increasingly dependent upon information supplied “in good faith” by producers, according to former Health Canada inspectors and industry participants.

The department has been overwhelmed for quite some time, but it is not necessarily their fault

Only governments can solve the Canadian illicit pot crisis: Don Pittis

New rules effective Dec. 16 will come just in time so you can leave a cannabis-laced cookie or beverage out for Santa.

But if the struggling Canadian pot business is looking forward to Cannabis 2.0  — as the availability of vaping products and edibles has been dubbed — they will likely be disappointed if they expect it to be a Christmas present that will solve their financial problems.

The sector that was so recently a stock market darling and that attracted small-scale entrepreneurs like moths to candle flames has suddenly fallen on hard times as heavier cannabis users, who make up the bulk of sales, simply don't patronize the legal market.

Ontario to allow private sector to handle legal pot distribution

Ontario plans to allow the private sector to handle distributing cannabis from producers to retailers, a sign that the provincial government is beginning to reduce its legal pot exposure.

According to an email sent by an Ontario Cannabis Store (OCS) executive to Canadian licensed producers late Tuesday that was obtained by BNN Bloomberg, the new measure to allow for a “third-party centralized distribution” system comes following feedback the government-run agency solicited last month after it engaged with the industry to determine whether it should get out of its wholesale cannabis business. It is unclear when the OCS plans to let a privately-run company handle product distribution.
