NOSM University medical students create impactful video about cannabis use by teens

med student

Northern Ontario has the highest rates of cannabis dependence in high-school students across the province, according to the study Drug use among Ontario Students, published by the Canadian Mental Health Association in 2020.

When a group of fourth-year medical students at NOSM University learned these statistics, they felt compelled to educate preteens and teenagers ages 12-18 as part of their unique advocacy curriculum.

“Our goal with this project was to create a captivating, information-packed video to educate youth about cannabis and share harm reduction strategies using reliable resources from the Canadian Paediatric Society (CPS) and the Government of Canada,” says Kelsey Pitre, fourth-year NOSM University medical student.

This cannabis product was recalled by Health Canada due to a faulty package label

bottles

"The product label has incorrect cannabinoid activation values," Health Canada said.

Another day, another recall. Health Canada flagged and recalled a cannabis product on April 8 due to incorrect packaging label concerning an Emblem CBD product.

The affected product currently being recalled is the Emblem Cannabis CBD 100 Cannabis Extract (30mL).

For Montrealers who get their items at the SQDC, there isn't much to worry about, considering the product was "sold directly to clients registered for medical purposes," Health Canada said.

Agra Ventures applauds Health Canada's recent regulatory improvements

Canada cannabis

Agra Ventures Ltd, a growth-oriented and diversified company focused on the international cannabis industry, applauds Health Canada’s recently announced regulatory changes that will have the effect of streamlining the application process for cannabis processors to bring products to market more quickly. On March 31, 2022, Health Canada communicated that it would begin granting all standard and micro-class processing license holders sales authorizations for dried and fresh cannabis products during the initial licensing process. Therefore, licensees such as AGRA will no longer have to apply for an amendment in order to sell to wholesalers. The planned improvements to the licensing process are scheduled to go into effect on April 19, 2022.

The pandemic had little impact on Canada's legal cannabis sales

girl in store

The pandemic saw a boom in legal recreational cannabis sales across Canada. From March 2020 to February 2021, sales totaled $2.5 billion, double the $1.25 billion of the previous 12 months. Surveys likewise reported more cannabis users and more frequent usage in 2020 than the year before.

The increases were often blamed, despite a lack of evidence, on the COVID-19 pandemic and related societal disruptions. Many people were stuck alone at home and feeling stressed. Some commentators later walked back their claims after it became clear there was no data to support them, but the narrative still persists.

Although it’s a compelling anecdote, our new research found that the growth in cannabis sales was more likely from industry expansion, rather than the pandemic.

Legal grow-ops to be licensed and moved into manufacturing or industrial areas

The City of Winnipeg is closing a pair of loopholes that allow medical cannabis grow-ops to sprout up in homes in quiet residential neighbourhoods.

City council's property committee voted unanimously Tuesday to approve bylaw changes that will require Health Canada-approved medical cannabis production facilities to operate within industrial or manufacturing areas.

In a parallel move next week, council's protection committee will consider a report that will require medical cannabis growing operations to be licensed and inspected by the city and pay fines for violating those licences.

Can you get high from THC stored in your body fat?

muscular woman

THC stored in fat cells gradually diffuse into the bloods. Regardless, the rate of diffusion increases under circumstances that promote fat utilization, such as exercising and fasting.

Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) accumulates in fat tissue and can stay there for months. Although this can serve as a barrier to those who face frequent testing, athletes may take delight in the results of exuding THC from the fat in their bodies.

Second-hand bong smoke may pose risks to bystanders in same room

man smoking bong

Short-term exposure may cause health effects such as eye, nose, throat and lung irritation, coughing, sneezing, runny nose and shortness of breath

Some people continue to maintain that second-hand cannabis smoke (SHCS) poses no risk, but a new study out of the U.S. begs to differ.

Researchers found home cannabis bong (water pipe) smoking increased the levels of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) compared to conditions before smoking began by 100- to 1,000-fold for most test sessions.

New York State’s Department of Health reports that particles in the PM2.5 size range “are able to travel deeply into the respiratory tract, reaching the lungs.”
