Ontario cannabis distributor cancels tender for same-day pot deliveries

Ontario's government-run cannabis distributor has cancelled its tender for couriers to make same-day pot deliveries.

The provincial corporation tasked with the online sale and distribution of recreational cannabis posted a cancellation notice on Friday via the Ontario government's tender portal.

The Ontario Cannabis Retail Corporation, which conducts e-commerce as the Ontario Cannabis Store, did not cite a specific reason for why it decided not to proceed, and the OCS was not immediately available for comment.

The corporation first posted the tender in January, calling for "expedited same-day delivery" for OCS orders. The project was set to begin as early as March in the Greater Toronto Area.

Cannabis oversupply in Oregon as Canada faces shortages

Since the legalization of cannabis, companies and stores opt to produce and sell weed products to cater to a lot of users. This massive growth of producers is observable in different states including Oregon, which leads to the oversupply of cannabis.

At present, Oregon contains pot products that will take up to seven years for users to consume it. While it looks like a positive note, cannabis growers and companies see this event as a problem.

The issuing of a license to grow cannabis would be the closest to why it overproduces. Oregon state issued over 1000 licenses to different cultivators and companies as compared to Canada’s meager 138 producers.

Marijuana stocks: Breaking down the recreational-to-medical sales ratio of the top growers

Interest in the marijuana industry is heating up among investors, and for good reason. Since the year began, the very first tradable cannabis exchange-traded fund, the Horizons Marijuana Life Sciences ETF, has practically tripled the returns of the broad-based S&P 500, which is having a stellar year of its own.

Pot retailers stuck with pricey leases as they await solutions to supply shortage

“It’s been a pretty tough, long winter for us. We both have families and we’ve had to make financial sacrifices,” said Breault, whose shop “Green Easy” remains shuttered as they await approval from Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis, the provincial agency overseeing Alberta’s cannabis industry.

Last week, the AGLC said an improving supply of marijuana allowed them to begin issuing 26 more retail licences, a slight easing on a moratorium bringing the number of Alberta retailers to 101.

But the slight increase in cannabis availability is still not enough to completely lift the moratorium, leaving an estimated 600 prospective pot retailers stuck in limbo.

How Ontario weed deserts — municipalities that have outlawed pot stores — allow the black market to flourish

This month Ontario opened its first brick and mortar cannabis shops, finally catching up with the rest of the country. However, the appearance of fashionable, though still scarce, stores has drawn attention to another trend in marijuana retail: weed deserts — municipalities that have outlawed legal cannabis shops. Mississauga is one of these deserts, yet it’s also home to TerrAscend, the largest licensed producer of cannabis in an urban setting in Canada.

Nuggets with purple crystals the size of movie popcorn, the marijuana grown at TerrAscend is harvested from 600 plants pruned by experts and hand-trimmed beneath 50 lights, creating a 60,000-watt environment of perpetual spring.

Addiction experts decry ban on cannabis sales in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside

Cannabis was legalized in Canada last year, but that hasn't made it easier for people who want to buy weed on Vancouver's Downtown Eastside.

Health workers and addiction experts say new municipal rules and licensing regimesare leaving people at the epicentre of the country's opioid crisis with no legal options if they want to use cannabis, which can help them kick more dangerous drugs.

Hash, hot drinks, candy: The 17 pot products Canadians could buy when edibles become legal

Canadians should expect a long list of cannabis-infused edibles, concentrates and other products to hit store shelves in the coming months, which will significantly expand the scope of the legal marijuana market, according to sources directly familiar with the matter.

The Ontario Cannabis Store (OCS) seeks to add as many as 17 new product types to its sales catalogue when the items become legal in Canada, according to a list provided to BNN Bloomberg by two sources familiar with the organization's plans.

One of the sources confirmed other provinces are looking to add a similar list of products.

Provinces expect to sell the products under the following categories:

Alberta's per capita legal cannabis sales leaves other provinces in its smoke

While the province hosts only 11.6 per cent of Canada’s population, it accounted for 27.7 per cent of legal pot sales in 2018, states a study conducted by Arcview Market Research and BDS Analytics.

That discrepancy is far greater than any other province, including notoriously cannabis-friendly B.C. where revenue gleaned from legal pot sales lagged well behind its share of the national population.

“Total (Alberta) spending on legal cannabis reached $217 million in 2018, accounting for 28 per cent of total nationwide sales, more than twice its share of Canada’s population,” states the report.

“Alberta’s comparatively liberal regulatory regime suggests it will rank among the fastest-growing cannabis markets.”
