Think twice before you inhale: Marijuana is only legal in about half of Oregon

Oregonians who plan to smoke, cultivate or carry cannabis under the state's new recreational marijuana law should make sure they do it in the roughly 47 percent of Oregon where it's strictly legal.

Fifty-three percent of the state is managed by such government entities as the U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Bureau of Land Management and National Park Service, where federal laws list marijuana in the same category as heroin, LSD and ecstasy.

Bud & Breakfasts are popular 4th of July weekend destinations

Still looking for plans for the 4th of July weekend? Never mind a bed and breakfast -- How about a “Bud and Breakfast?”

Marijuana-themed inns are sprouting all over Colorado like...well, weeds. Offering "wake and bake breakfast", "4:20 Happy Hour", and cannabis-infused massages, these lodges are just one of the many creative ways entrepreneurs in the Centennial State are capitalizing on the legal recreational marijuana market.

Other places like marijuana adult camps are more like resorts and “have everything down to even a wine and food pairing with a particular strain,” said Nick Colas, chief market strategist at Convergex, a brokerage services provider in New York.

Cannabis and compromises

In 2012 Colorado voters legalized the sale and consumption of marijuana for recreational purposes. Some ski towns have embraced marijuana, treating it little differently than alcohol. But others have been biding their time.

To Vail and other towns, cannabis use by visitors and residents is an undeniable reality. But that doesn't mean they will allow stores selling THC-infused products.

Here in Canada recreational marijuana use is still illegal though access to medical marijuana has been completely reinvented. This has come with its own headache.

Alaska takes aim at marijuana social clubs

Judging by the scene at Pot Luck Events on Wednesday night, one would never guess the state has advised the club to shut down.

Members had come to the downtown Anchorage marijuana social club to smoke, take dab hits and watch the “Chronic Comedy Show,” while eating free candy provided at the nonalcoholic bar. “Bud of the week” samples -- provided by growers, not the club, owner Theresa Collins explained -- were displayed on a table in the back of the room.

Yet the club, which has been open since March, is one of six businesses that received cease-and-desist letters from Cynthia Franklin, director of the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board and the newly created Marijuana Control Board, in late June.

Colorado camp resort for marijuana users falls through

DURANGO — A planned pot-friendly ranch resort in southwest Colorado has been snuffed before it opened. The 170-acre CannaCamp resort touted weed-friendly activities such as hiking and fishing.

But a deal with the landowner fell through, and the marijuana-tourism company promoting CannaCamp announced Thursday that the resort won't open after all.

The MaryJane Group, which runs marijuana-friendly inns in Denver and Silverthorne, announced that it hopes to find a new home for CannaCamp by 2016.

Guests who already booked stays starting at $395 per person per night are being offered stays in the bed-and-breakfasts instead.
